Yellowstone expedition journal and related papers, 1818-1949.

The journal, dated 1818-1820, describes the journey up the Missouri of the 1st and 2nd Battlions of the Rifle Regiment and part of the 6th Infantry. The text notes the building of Cantonment Missouri, hunting expeditions, river trips, and life in winter camps. It includes drawings of Cantonment Missouri and Martin's Cantonment, copies of letters from Gale about scurvy at Cantonment Missouri, and an inventory (dated 1830) of hospital bedding at Jefferson Barracks. Accompanied by three notebooks containing holograph transcripts and research notes relating to the expedition by James Taylor Dunn, a typescript transcript, a letter dated August 26, 1949 to Dunn from Wendell H. Stephenson of the Mississippi Valley Historical Review regarding publication of the journal, and an offprint by William J. Reals entitled Scurvy at Fort Atkinson, 1819-1820.
